Ottawa, or at least that segment of Ottawa that has bought into the “War on Terror knows no bounds” philosophy, still has their knickers in tight little knots over an essay that reportedly glorified violence against Jews written in by a student in a private Islamic school that reportedly received praise of some kind from two teachers in the school.
I gotta ask the question… is this news? Here’s my take, some kid repeats what s/he has learned at home in a school essay, two teachers agree with said views and tell the student that, school officials deal with the issue when it comes to light - end of story, or it should have been if the media had left it alone. But they didn’t, and now, if you believe the media, our local (Right)WingNut radion station, and what you hear in places like the public transit system, it’s getting pretty close to a full blown Islamic consipracy in the very heart of the nations capital. Personally I have no idea what was said in the essay, if it says what it is reported to have said it is wrong, every effort needs to made to ensure that that students ideas are corrected, and the teachers involved should be disciplined.
This incident was the hot topic of discussion between a group of people on the bus this morning, with one woman, sitting between her two young children, pronouncing the whole affair proof positive that “you can’t trust a single one of them because they all hate anyone who isn’t Muslim” and “I wouldn’t trust one of those Christian haters with my kids”. What did those kids learn this morning and who holds ultimate responsibility for that?

On the downside, I believe one of the two teachers actually assisted the student with artwork for the essay.
On the upside, the principal of the school dealt with the issue immediately, firmly, and transparently: the teachers were suspended immediately, an investigation was launched, and today the Islamic school is hosting a multifaith assembly. B’Nai Brith Canada praised her actions and her handling of the matter.
