It appears that there is a lot to be grateful for on Iraqi election day. The killings at the polls are fewer than feared, voter turnout is higher than expected, and a greater number of Sunni are voting than foreseen. This is one of those times when I’m profoundly glad to have at least some of my concerns proven wrong.
A successful election event no more creates a democracy than a Mass creates a Catholic: but we can hope…at least for today…that this marks the beginning of the end of the Iraqi nightmare.
