It struck me, completely out of the blue (well, almost, I was reading a corporate mission statement at the time), that the problem with the the U.S. government is that they don’t have a current mission statement to guide them - that’s why they’re running around willy, nilly, poking their fingers here, there, and every where, satisfying some short term goals - but (seemingly at least to the rest of the world) basically direction-less.
So… in order to do our bit to help out the world, and just possibly promote a joining of left, right, and centre, ideologies right here on Stageleft, I propose that we collectively develop a mission statement for George W. Bush and his administration. Imagine the possibilities if we’re able to pull this off - - absolutely everybody will have a clear understanding of what the U.S. is trying to do, why they are trying to do it, and how they intend to go about doing it.
In order to help us out with this exercise I googled for the elements of a good mission statement and found that a good mission statement should:
- * Be easy to understand;
- * Contain a “Statement of Purpose”;
- * Contain a “Statement of Strategy”;
- * Contain a “Statement of Behavioral Standards”; and (above all),
- * Be achievable
The value of this will be immense as a really good mission statement can help motivate people within the organization (or country in this case), give everyone (from the top on down) direction and guidance, and, even function as a good marketing tool…. all areas Bush is most certainly suffering in these days.
