‘Lawyers Group Proposes Reforms for United Nations
( N.Y. Times ) - The International Association of Lawyers proposed Saturday the United Nations’ charter should be overhauled and that its headquarters should be moved from New York
ABSOLUTELY !! George Bush and the current U.S. administration have shown that they are not willing to co-operate with the international community unless that community does what they want… they (and the British Government) have lied, manipulated information and intelligence, and through their lack of diplomacy the U.S. administration has shown complete contempt for the organization they host.
After the [complete mis-] handling of the whole Iraqi situation the United States has little or no credibility or trust left in the international community and keeping the U.N.’s headquarters there will only serve to detract from its ability to properly serve the international community.
Even if it has to operate out of a hovel in northern eastern Bulgaria a move, sooner rather than later, will distance the U.N. from the United States and in doing so enhance it’s mission. While it needs to be done to prevent political abuse I can see none of the five permanent Security Council members giving up their veto willingly and I can see at least the U.S. and China pulling out of the U.N. completely if that policy is imposed.
