The U.K. Telegraph carried this op/ed article last week forwarded to me by a right winger convinced that my conversion to the cause is still a possibility.

The following paragraph in the article speculates that the U.S. may take a temporary leave of the U.N. if their war is not sanctioned.

Well-connected advisers tell me that if, as now seems likely, the UN refuses to back action against terror, Mr Bush will announce a “temporary” suspension of America’s membership, to be accompanied by an offer: if the UN gets its act together and carries out long-overdue reforms, America (and its money) will return. But if there is no reform, the temporary withdrawal will, de facto, become permanent.

This, I imagine, will be what the U.S. considers their ultimate trump card - the biggest “we’re taking our toys and going home” ploy in history.

It is something that, after thinking about it for a bit, makes sense from a U.S. stand point - it allows them to persue their foreign policy without hinderance from a world whose concerns the current U.S. Administration seems to find so pesky and irrevelent these days.

If it happens it is something that the rest of the world must move address very quickly. A rogue nation the size of the U.S. which has already stated that it will never allow another nation on the planet to come close to having a military that can do it damage that operates with distain for world concerns and considerations is a danger to all.
